It’s glaringly clean and on display in the lobby is a magnificent aquarium. On entering it is very typical of the Japanese Restaurant and fits well within the definition of a bistro. Bistro is defined as the following: in its original Parisian incarnation, a small restaurant, serving moderately priced simple meals in a modest setting.
I’ve passed it many times and decided that we would give it try as soon as it opened. This is a new one and is situated in the new strip mall off the main drag in Newmarket. Overall, I think this place is a gem, and is now my go-to place for a nice sushi lunch in the Seacoast NH area. Those two minor issues are not enough for me to give Kume a 4 instead of a 5. The only minor drawbacks were that it took awhile for my maki rolls to arrive, especially considering there was only one other party (who were finished with their meal when I arrived), and the portion of wasabi on my plate was a bit small for me. Nicely presented, as seen on some of the photos posted here on Unilocal,the portions of fish and avocado were generous and most importantly the fish was very fresh and the avocado was right at the level of ripeness that I like best. I had an unagi/avocado roll, and a salmon/avocado roll. The maki rolls were the stand out of the meal. The salad was your typical small salad served with a meal at a Japanese restaurant. The miso soup, which for any fan of sushi restaurants like me, is a significant starter, and this serving passed the test for having the exact level of flavor. It comes with two maki rolls, miso soup, and a small salad. I got the maki roll lunch special, which is $ 9. Instead I opted for the higher of the two available ratings because the food here is really excellent.
As is often the case, if Unilocal offered ½ stars, I think I would give Kume a 4 ½. This is a relatively new addition to the area’s sushi options, so I gave it a try yesterday.
